Jill Hutchins

Chair, School Planning Practice

As the Chair of McMillan Education’s School Planning practice, Jill’s leadership of colleagues, and her guidance of families, are both informed by her student-centered values and extraordinary background working in schools and admissions offices over many years at both the school and college level. Jill immediately infects those around her with a sense of ease and confidence. For families looking to understand the programmatic and cultural nuances of the wide spectrum of day and boarding schools potentially available to them, Jill uses her unique 30,000-foot view of the landscape to provide meaningful education about the environments that can best serve unique students’ goals. Parents and students alike are empowered and reassured by Jill’s sage guidance through the complexities of the admissions process that only a seasoned admissions expert can provide. What makes Jill particularly effective in the lives of students and families is that her impressive student and school knowledge, along with her unrivaled admissions expertise, are bundled in her authentic commitment to whole student advocacy, her personal warmth, humor, and natural accessibility. Simply put, students and parents love working with Jill and her colleagues count themselves lucky to be the beneficiaries of her professional and personal gifts and talents.

Jill’s admissions expertise extends back to her early work at the college level as Assistant Director of Admissions at Marlboro College and Landmark College, both located in beautiful Vermont. She transitioned from higher education to the independent and boarding school world when she joined Vermont Academy, in White River Junction, Vermont, where she quickly became the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. Jill comes to McMillan Education from The Dublin School in Dublin, New Hampshire, where she oversaw the admissions team and day-to-day admissions operations while collaborating with senior administrators and other stakeholders on strategic planning in her role as Associate Head of School for Enrollment Management.

In all of her school and college roles, Jill applied her knowledge of student learning differences to ensure that student needs would be appropriately supported by their educational environment. In addition to admissions work, Jill has served as a learning specialist at Vermont Academy and a cognitive disability specialist at Texas State University San Marcos.

Jill’s expertise in admissions and in school strategic planning has been recognized by The Association of Boarding Schools, where she served on the Board of Trustees, and by the Small Boarding Schools Association, where she was honored for her contributions for advancing the mission of small boarding schools.

Jill is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

Jill and her husband Ray live in southern New Hampshire with their Portuguese water poodle pup named Finbar. They are proud parents to Lyle, a college student pursuing a degree in music. Music is a big part of Jill’s family’s life as she met her husband playing in a rock band and loves to learn about new music from her son. When not engaging in her work, Jill loves to take hikes, see live music, play board games and spend time with her family.
