I recently revisited some of Harlan Cohen‘s (NY Times Best Selling Author and a great follow on Threads) tips for college, and it made me think about creating a college visit checklist. Should anything else be added?
Reminder: College life is about finding both people and places where you belong. You won’t “find your people” instantly — and that’s okay. Look for spaces where you can show up and be included simply because you exist.
Play: Fun & Relaxation
☐ Where do students hang out for fun (lounges, lawns, game rooms)?
☐ Are there clubs, teams, or activities you’d join?
☐ Did you see events or flyers for things you’d enjoy?
☐ Did you try visiting a casual hangout to see the vibe?
Pray: Spirituality & Reflection
☐ Are there spaces for prayer, meditation, mindfulness, or quiet time?
☐ Are there student faith groups or spiritual leaders?
☐ Is there a peaceful nature spot or “chill zone” for recharging?
Live: Housing & Comfort
☐ Did you tour more than one dorm type?
☐ Are bathrooms, laundry, and common spaces clean/safe?
☐ Would you feel comfortable living here?
Love: Friendships & Belonging
☐ Are there groups where you’d feel welcome?
☐ How do students make friends here?
☐ Is there visible support for your identity/interests?
☐ Did you meet at least one approachable student?
Work: Careers & Academics
☐ Who helps students get internships or jobs?
☐ Are professors approachable and supportive?
☐ Are there first-year opportunities in your field?
Sweat: Wellness & Health
☐ Are gyms, fields, and classes accessible?
☐ Are there outdoor activities nearby?
☐ Is mental health support easy to find?
☐ Do you know where health/counseling services are?
Learn: Academics & Support
☐ Did you visit study spaces or libraries?
☐ Did you sit in on a class to see the style?
☐ Are there tutoring or academic help centers?
☐ Did professors seem open during office hours?
Lead: Leadership & Impact
☐ Are there student leadership or activism opportunities?
☐ Can students start their own clubs or events?
☐ Are there service or outreach programs?
Find Mentors: Supportive Adults
☐ Did you meet a caring professor, adviser, or staff member?
☐ Did students mention helpful mentors?
☐ Do you know where to go for advice or help?
Add-Ons
☐ Can you name 3 welcoming places where you could “just show up”?
☐ Did you try at least one event or group during the visit?
☐ Were you okay realizing that first friends might be temporary?
☐ Did you find a “go-to” place for lonely or hard days?
☐ Did you explore something outside your comfort zone?
☐ Could you picture yourself here on both good and bad days?
Reflection:
Most welcoming place: ___________________________
Kindest person I met: ____________________________
Where I’d go for comfort/support: __________________
