Elizabeth “Whiz” Hutchinson, M.Ed.

Whiz started her lifelong journey as an educator at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. During her twelve-year tenure at Choate, Whiz immersed herself in virtually every aspect of school life. As an admission officer, she learned both the tradecraft of the admission process and the importance of pulling together a community of students whose primary role is to grow together. She also served as a form dean, dormitory head, classroom teacher of various courses, department chair of psychology and religion, advisor, and gymnastics coach. At St, Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts, Whiz took on one of the most challenging roles in boarding school life. As the Dean of Students, she oversaw all facets of residential and student life, and continued teaching and advising students and families. Whiz’s final and longest boarding school stop of over 20 years was at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware, where she directed the counseling and wellness programs, coordinated closely with the college counseling office on college transition programming, counseled individual students, and trained faculty and staff. In all of her boarding roles, Whiz’s student life work overlapped and aligned with admissions and college counseling.

Whiz earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and anthropology from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. She went on to earn a master’s degree in counseling from Harvard University’s School of Education in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she also served as a teaching fellow and research assistant for some of the University’s most well known scholars in the areas of adolescent and moral development.

Whiz’s husband Jay, who remains a member of the St. Andrew’s faculty, has served as school chaplain alongside Whiz throughout their shared boarding school journey. When they are not on the St. Andrew’s campus, they enjoy spending time in their home in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, where you can catch Whiz reading, sewing, enjoying the outdoors, and hanging out with their adult son Jack, Newfundland Ajax, and cats Fig and Widget.
