Don McMillan, M.A., M.F.A.CEO
Along with his wife Sarah, Don manages the team of McMillan educational consultants and works directly with families across the country and throughout the world in school and college planning. Regularly quoted as an expert on education in major publications such as The Boston Globe and The New York Times, Don also shares his experience as a sought-after speaker at national conferences.
Additionally, Don has been a widely published writer in many newspapers and magazines. Don is a Vice President and sits on the Board of Directors of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the industry’s governing body and provider of professional development, training, and guidelines for ethical practices. Don also serves on committees for the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).
During his 25 years at independent schools, Don served a number of roles, including Academic Dean, Curriculum Director, College Counselor, English Chair, and teacher of Advanced Placement English and French. As he also ran football, hockey and tennis programs, he now enjoys helping student-athletes present their profiles. Don also supervised, along with his wife, Sarah, boys’ and girls’ dormitories. His experience as faculty member and administrator includes stints at St. Mark’s School, Bancroft School, and Kimball Union Academy.
Don attended St. George’s School, and went on to earn a dual English-French degree at Colby College, a Master’s in French at Middlebury College and The University of Paris, and a Master of Fine Arts in Writing at Goddard College.
Don works with a range of learners, and has trained independent and charter school faculties in learning differences for the “All Kinds of Minds” program.
Himself an award-winning writer, Don enjoys guiding student writers in finding their own voice in developing and submitting personal and supplementary admissions essays. Having lived and studied abroad, Don speaks French fluently, and understands the complexities of presenting applications for international students and domestic students with goals of studying abroad.
Don is the father of a pair of sons who have attended independent day and boarding school and played competitive sports in prep school and college. Don and Sarah live in Boston and enjoy spending time in their home-away-from home on the coast of Maine.
